Hiking and Exploring Gros Morne, Green Gardens and the Tablelands
For the first time since 2010 I got back to the amazing west coast of the island of Newfoundland and more specifically, Gros Morne National Park just north of Corner Brook.
Traveling this time with Ashley, Darrell and Kristen, we split our time between Bonne Bay area, Tablelands, Green Gardens and Cow Head.
The most laborious of days came on during our day hike into Green Gardens. We took the short route but I was (stupidly) carrying a lot of heavy camera equipment that I had been testing and reviewing for PetaPixel.
We also happened to be in Gros Morne during the tail end of the Perseids meteor shower and luckily I managed to capture a picture of one!

- Our superb accommodations at the Lomond River Lodge. D & K had been the car for much longer than they’re used to and they had begun to fist fight.
- Looking across Bonne Boy.
- The road at sunset, cutting through the Tablelands on its way to Trout River.
- The beach in Trout River.
- Some of us were more tired than others.
- While sitting outside one evening I remembered that the International Space Station should be passing shortly. So I grabbed the sticks and set up just in time to capture it as it went overhead.
- A long time goal has been to capture a long exposure of the stars in the Tablelands as they rotate overhead. Every previous time I’d planned to shoot this it had clouded over. I got it this time though.
- The Big Dipper and a meteor from the Perseids.
- The next day we took off to Cow Head and Shallow Bay provincial park to take in the miles of sandy beaches and heat. Well, one out of two ain’t bad as it was pretty chilly.
- mmmmmmmmoooooooosssseeeeeburrrggerrs
- Guts loaded down with moose burgers, we departed for the short but annoying hike to the boat ride up Western Brook Pond. As you can see, it was no longer sunny. A fact we would soon come to take issue with.
- Despite the weather change, these views and humongous big mountains were well worth the bitter, bitter cold.
- I think we all hand wind burn on our face. Last boat ride of the day, it was cold, wet and windy.
- Naturally by the time we were back down the coast near Bonne Bay it had become quite nice out again.
- And I wanted coffee.
- The next day began with a lot of ups and downs. Up the hill and down the hill, over and over till we reached the ocean. We were hiking Green Gardens.
- Gang’s all here!
- There isn’t a road for 10kms!
- Darrell was very happy with this pile of rocks.
- I declared myself god of fire.
- The girls scouring the bottom of the Tablelands for some interesting rocks.
- Like this one.
- On the way home someone made a special request to stop into the Insectarium just outside of Dear Lake. Here’s some honeybees.
- This man held this thing on his hand. Apparently it would bite him if he didn’t speak to it nicely.
- mmmmmmmmmmburgers
